Every Australian Counts are campaigning for a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – it’s a groundbreaking social reform that guarantees every Australian a lifetime of support if they become severely disabled. It’s a declaration that we believe every single Australian deserves to live a full, dignified life. It’s an affirmation that, regardless of disability, we are all Australians and everyone deserves a fair go.

How does an NDIS work?

The model of NDIS recommended by the Productivity Commission is not a new tax or an extension of the Medicare levy – it is a social reform paid for out of national revenue, changing the focus of disability support from welfare to investment.

An NDIS will transform the way services are funded and delivered; it will give people with a disability and their families more support, choice and control.

• It will help every Australian with a severe disability to get the same opportunities and supports, regardless of where they live and how they became disabled.
• It will help children and young people with a disability to get the educational and social opportunities other kids take for granted.
• It will help adults with a disability move away from their families, if they wish to, get work and lead full and happy lives.
• It will let families retire from 24/7 caring and help them to transition their family member to a supported future in the community.
