We provide free short term counselling to caring families throughout Victoria. You can refer a client who might benefit from talking through ways of managing their caring role better.

People are eligible to use our service if they provide care and support to a family member or friend who is frail and elderly, has dementia, a mental illness, a disability, chronic illness or complex needs, or receives palliative care. We can also provide counselling if a client has recently stopped providing care.

We can provide short-term counselling (up to six sessions) that will mainly focus on issues related to the caring role. Carers can come back after a break or if there is something new that they need to deal with.

Our counsellors work across metropolitan and rural regions of Victoria. Counsellors that speak languages other than English are available in some areas.

Arranging a referral

You can make a referral with your client's consent. Complete our referral form using our guidelines for referrers.

Return it to the carer counselling and advisory service:

By fax: (03) 9396 9595
By post: Carers Victoria, PO Box 2204, Footscray 3011
Or scan and email it to us

You do not need to post original documents if you have already sent a fax or email.

We receive a lot of referrals and it may take us some time to process.

We will contact your client directly to assess their needs. With their consent, we will write and let you know whether he or she was eligible and decided to proceed with counselling.

We will also let you know when the six sessions of counselling have been completed.

If you feel your client needs urgent help contact our advisory line directly.
