Mental disorders identified as leading cause of disability in young Australians

Anxiety and depressive disorders are the single leading cause of disability in young Australians, according to research published in the latest issue of the Medical Journal of Australia.

The study analysed data for 170 diseases and injuries from the 2003 Australian Burden of Disease and Injury Study, and found that anxiety and depression accounted for 17% of all disability among males aged 20-24 years and 27% of disability in females from the same age group.

The Mental Health Council of Australia has said that the findings provide further evidence that the Government must fulfil its election commitment to make mental health a major second term agenda.
