City of Melbourne, queerspace and Carers Victoria's new free initiative for LGBTIQA+ carers

City of Melbourne, queerspace and Carers Victoria are working together to support LGBTIQA+ carers in Victoria.

This project aims to provide information, social connection and referral pathways for LGBTIQA+ carers.

This will be a free group for carers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other diverse sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTIQA+) and is open to people 18 years and over. We hope to attract a diverse age range and foster positive intergenerational connections within the group.

We will be designing six group sessions occurring on a fortnightly basis, starting in February 2019. Sessions will be held at Drummond Street Services, 100 Drummond Street, Carlton.

We recognise LGBTIQA+ carers have unique joys and challenges and we want to create a group that meets your specific needs. If you are interested please complete this form to tell us about yourself and what you would like from this group.

Survey results: LGBTIQ People and Care Relationships

As part of MIDSUMMA 2018, Carers Victoria invited LGBTIQ people in care relationships to answer a short survey about their experiences. Read a summary of survey results

Care relationships provide unpaid and informal care to someone with support needs. Carers may be friends, partners, biological family members or family of choice.

Carers Victoria thanks everyone involved in the survey. Responses help us better understand the needs of LGBTIQ carers so we can advocate for improved services.

We are always keen to hear about the experiences of Victorian LGBTIQ carers and carers who support an LGBTIQ person. You can contact us on 1800 242 636 or at www.carersvictoria.org.au. Stay in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Are you an LGBTI carer?

Do you care for a partner, friend or family member with health or other support needs? This may be someone living with a disability, mental health challenge, chronic or terminal illness, addiction or an older person with care needs.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans/gender diverse and intersex (LGBTI) carers look after people with a variety of care needs. They often take on a caring role for friends and ‘family of choice' as well as biological family.

Carers Victoria recognises that all individuals and caring situations are unique. Our aim is to provide services that are respectful and inclusive of all carers at every stage of life. We are committed to working alongside LGBTI communities to improve services and advocacy for LGBTI carers and carers of LGBTI people.
