Workshop Feature: 'Pop-up' Lockdown Workshops

In response to the ongoing lockdowns in Victoria, Carers Victoria has added additional 'pop-up lockdown' workshops for carers which focus on supporting your health and wellbeing. The additional sessions include

  • Carers Coffee Club: a chance for you to have a social catch-up with other carers and discuss a specific topic such as cooking or pets;
  • Write your Cares Away: a workshop which teaches you how writing can be used to promote wellbeing and self-care;
  • Meditation: a chance to take a break and unwind at the end of the day with our qualified meditation teacher;
  • Cooking with Carers: a great excuse to get in the kitchen and cook along as we make a healthy and delicious meal together.

Entertaining Kids in Lockdown 

Run out of ideas on how to entertain the kids in lockdown? What’s On Melbourne have put together a parents’ guide for beating lockdown boredom, including art sessions with the virtual NGV, “crafternoons”, a virtual tour of the Melbourne Museum and livestreams from the Melbourne Zoo.

School Holiday Fun 

School holidays are fast approaching once again, which means it's time to come up with some strategies to keep the kids engaged.

The Satellite Foundation has organised two programs for children and young people aged who have a parent or carer with a mental health challenge. The "Creature Comforts" series is an online series over two weeks where 8-11 year-olds will have the opportunity to come up with some wild craft creations while making new friends over Zoom. The Songwriting series is for 12-14 year-olds to explore skills in writing, performing, recording or creating professional-sounding music online.

Featured Workshop: Cooking with Carers 

Join Carers Victoria’s very own live cooking show where you can watch, learn and join in as you cook from home.

Learn new recipes that are easy to cook and sure to impressive even the fussiest eaters in your life.

You will also have the opportunity to meet other carers, hear about their favourite recipes and share cooking tips.

Webinar Series: Aged Care Reforms

The Department of Health is hosting webinars for residential aged care residents and staff to learn about aged care reforms. These reforms were announced in the 2021-22 Budget and in response to the Aged Care Royal Commission. To see what’s coming up, or to access past webinars on the topic, click here.  


Travellers Aid Scooter Safety Sessions

Travellers Aid Australia is launching their first Scooter Safety Practice sessions. These sessions aim to assist new mobility scooter users in building confidence to use their device on public transport. 

The sessions are a registered event and will be held at the following locations:

  • Seymour Station, Thursday 1 July, 11am – 1pm
  • Heyfield, 29 July 2021, time TBC
  • Shepparton Station, TBC
  • Braybrook Community Hub, Tuesday 29 June, 2pm – 4pm

Planet Puberty Workshops

Planet Puberty has some great workshops coming up in July and August, for parents or carers of a child with intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder.

Planet Puberty is a digital resource suite that aims to provide the latest information, strategies and resources for supporting a child through puberty. It was co-designed with adults with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder across Australia. The website was funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and Carers Victoria was part of the stakeholder advisory group.

Sector Seminar Series: Trends in Service Design

The final session of our Sector Seminar Series for staff, volunteers and professionals working in the design or delivery of support services for carers is back for its final session this month.

Join us on Tuesday 22 June for the final seminar on the topic “Principles of Co-Design: What is it and when do we use it?”

Brunch and walking groups in the West are back

Did you know Carers Victoria hosts several programs for carers living in the West? These groups provide carers an opportunity to connect with other carers and find out about support and services. Attendance is free, however registration is essential.

The groups include:

  • Werribee Walking Group (Third Tuesday of the month, 10am-11am. Includes walk and a coffee catch-up)
  • Hobsons Bay Brunch Group (First Monday of the month, 10am-11am. Catch up over light brunch)
  • Brimbank Brunch group (First Thursday of the month, 10am-11am. Catch up over light brunch)
  • Caroline Springs Walking Group (First Wednesday of the month, 10am-11am. Includes walk and a coffee catch-up)

Featured Workshop: Shrink Your Art

Carers Victoria's highly popular art group for carers is back. 

Join the art group to learn how to create jewellery and art projects with shrink art. The group will meet weekly over three weeks to complete our projects together.

Shrink art is an easy and fun craft activity. You will draw or print your art on thin plastic sheets which will shrink with it, leaving a detailed finish.

You will receive all the art supplies you need to take part in this workshop via mail prior to the first session.

Join us for a very special episode of our videocast Conversations with Carers Victoria on Wednesday 5 May at 2pm as we hear all about eye health from our friends at the Vision Initiative to bring you valuable information on the most common eye conditions, eye testing, low cost eye care services and how to protect your eyes and those of your loved one.

ATSA Independent Living Expo

The ATSA Independent Living Expo takes place at the Melbourne Showgrounds between 18-19 May and with more than 45 free seminar sessions there is something for everyone.

There will be over 130 exhibitors displaying a wide range of products and services in assistive technology, mobility solutions, pressure care, employment support, accessible recreation/holiday ideas, modified motor vehicles and a lot more.

The Expo is open to visitors of all ages, including those with a disability, seniors and their families, friends and carers.

COTA Victoria: Will Australia’s Aged Care System be Fixed?

COTA Victoria is hosting an event about the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety on Thursday 15 April from 11am-1pm.

Making healthy food choices for better health

This information session will teach you about healthy eating habits, basic nutrition principles and how you can get the most out of your meals every day.

Topics will include:

  • The importance of fibre, protein and calcium in our diet;
  • Understanding food labels;
  • Understanding serving sizes;
  • The Australian Dietary Guidelines;
  • Delicious recipes.
