Our young carers program

The Respite Connections young carer team can help if you are at risk of leaving school or a vocational training program early because of your caring responsibilities.

You may frequently miss school or not have time to finish homework. You may feel distracted or unconnected with your teachers and other students. You may even be considering leaving school because you find it hard to cope.

Who do we help?

You can access our young carer services if you:

• are a young carer, up to the age of 25, years who provides significant care and support for a parent, partner, child, relative or friend who has a disability, is frail aged, or who has a severe mental or physical condition
• are at primary or secondary school or a vocational education equivalent and are at risk of leaving school early because of your caring role; and you
• live in the local government areas of Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton , Wyndham or Hobson's Bay

If you live in a local government area not covered by us you may be able to use similar services provided by one of the other respite and carer support organisations across Victoria.

How can we help?

The Respite Connections young carer program operates in the Western Metropolitan region of Melbourne providing support when you need it and the skills you need to help you to cope with your caring responsibilities.

We can help you:

• To pay for school costs and recreational activities (like sport, music, dance and other hobbies)
• By listening when you need it and helping you to focus on your own health, wellbeing and needs
• Arrange practical support in your home
• Organise a planned break from your caring responsibilities
• Meet other young carers in your area for peer support
• Join in holiday activities and camps

You can also ask your GP, case manager or support worker to make a referral with your consent.

Your confidentiality and privacy

Our young carer program is completely confidential and we handle the personal information you share with us according to the legal standards set by government. You or your parent or guardian can read our privacy policy if you want more information.
