Carers Victoria Membership Card and Other Cards

If you’re a carer and feeling unsure about the many different assistance cards available, this guide will help you understand what each card is for and the benefits they offer.

Carers Victoria Membership Card 

 

When you join Carers Victoria, you’ll receive either a digital or physical membership card with your member ID. This ID is specifically for use accessing services and benefits through Carers Victoria. 

Membership is free and open to carers, former carers, supporters and Carer Support Groups. 

Benefits include: 

  • Invitations to events, including Mingle gatherings, workshops and carer programs. 
  • Opportunities to contribute to advocacy through surveys, focus groups and research. 
  • Our monthly eBulletin The Voice with carer news, events and stories. 
  • Free digital access to the Australian Carers Guide. 
  • Member-only deals like discounted Hoyts tickets and Accor hotel stays.

Victorian Carer Card (‘We Care’ Card)

The Victorian Government Carer Card, also called the We Care card, recognises the important work unpaid carers and foster/kinship carers do in the community. 

You’re eligible if you are: 

  • An unpaid primary carer of someone with a disability, illness, mental health condition or ageing-related care needs 
  • A young carer helping a family member or friend 
  • A state-registered foster, kinship, respite or permanent carer 
  • An informal kinship carer 

Benefits include: 

  • A Carer myki card with: 
  • 50% discount on public transport 
  • Free weekend travel in two consecutive metropolitan zones 
  • Free travel during National Carers Week 
  • Off-peak travel vouchers 
  • Discounts at many businesses across Victoria (e.g. dining, shopping, leisure and fuel)

Companion Card

The Victorian Companion Card supports people with a significant, permanent disability who need lifelong attendant care to take part in community activities. 

It allows a companion (which can be a carer, parent, friends or paid support worker) to attend events and activities for free. This includes public transport, cinemas, gyms, swimming pools, sports events and more. 

The card is issued to the person with a disability, not the carer. The person can choose who accompanies them as a companion. 

To be eligible in Victoria, the person must: 

  • Live in Victoria and be a permanent Australian resident 
  • Have a permanent, significant disability 
  • Need lifelong attendant care to participate in most activities

National Assistance Card 

The National Assistance Card is a personalised card to assist people with disabilities to navigate their communities with greater confidence and ease.

The card is currently available to people with a brain injury and those with autism. 

The card can be used in everyday or emergency situations where a cardholder needs assistance or support.   

The National Assistance Card can: 

  • help cardholders communicate their unique areas of difficulty and the assistance they may need 
  • give cardholders greater independence 
  • assist cardholders to feel more confident in everyday social situations 
  • provide peace of mind for families and carers 
  • enhance community understanding of disability and health conditions 
  • support positive community interaction with cardholders.
