Caring for carers takes centre stage at Parliament House

Published on 20 October, 2025

Last Thursday 16 October, Carers Victoria was proud to partner with Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) and a number of community organisations for a successful Carer Showcase in Queen’s Hall at Parliament. Politicians of all persuasions took time to meet with Connecting Carers in Their Community grant recipients and chat to our partners in the Victorian Carer Strategy refresh the stallholders about different aspects of being a carer in Victoria.

After the Welcome to Country from Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr, Minister for Carers Ros Spence announced the launch of the refreshed Victorian Carer Strategy for 2025-2035. Both Minister Spence and her opposition counterpart Tim Bull (both pictured below with Carers Victoria CEO Judith Abbott) spoke warmly about the vital importance of carers, before handing out certificates to the Connecting Carers in Their Communities grant winners.

Carers, supporters, friends and family were joined by members of Parliament for a chance to mingle and chat over lunch about the rewards and challenges of being a carer. It was great to have Premier Jacinta Allan make an appearance as she spoke to carers and stakeholders in between parliamentary sitting sessions. As Tim Bull MP noted in his speech, caring is very much about being in the trenches 52 weeks of the year, not just one week of celebration.

We hope everyone who came to Parliament last week heeded the ongoing message of ‘care for a carer’. It was our pleasure to be a part of a significant event in recognition of this amazing group of Victorians.
