This National Carers Week (12-18 October, 2025), people and organisations across our communities are reaching out to connect Victoria’s 750000+ unpaid carers, over a quarter of whom live in rural and regional Victoria. This year's theme, ‘Care for a Carer,' provides an opportunity to recognise the profound and often unseen contribution made by people who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend, particularly those in rural and regional areas.
We urge every regional business, neighbour, and community group to show carers how valuable they are, whether it is offering to run an errand, provide a cup of tea, or simply check in with a friend who is juggling a caring role.
As a mark of recognition for carers, significant regional buildings will be lit up at night with the Carers Victoria colours during National Carers Week:
- Eastbank Concert Hall in Shepparton
- Benalla Library
- The Conservatory in Bendigo
"Regional carers are the backbone of many towns around Victoria. We are recognising these carers and the communities they support by lighting up key local landmarks,” said Carers Victoria CEO Judith Abbott.
“Throughout National Carers Week there will be a host of wonderful, free events in regional areas; some for the carers themselves, others to raise awareness of the importance of Victorian carers and to encourage people to 'Care for a Carer'. We want every person in our community to know and to show how valuable unpaid carers are."
A substantial 37% of Carers Victoria support services are delivered to rural and regional carers, underscoring the vital nature of this support outside major metropolitan hubs.
Unpaid carers save the state's economy over $18 billion annually by providing essential assistance to people with disability, mental illness, chronic conditions, or age-related care needs.
In recognition of their commitment, local Carer Support Groups and community organisations across key regional centres are hosting activities aimed at providing respite and connection. Everything from swimming lessons in Bendigo to gardening and nutrition classes in Warnambool will be on offer for carers, their families and local residents.
Seven days of free public transport will also be available throughout Victoria for eligible Carer Card holders. This includes unrestricted travel on V/Line train and coach services, significantly easing the travel burden for carers needing to access appointments or simply take time for themselves.
Regional carers, friends and family are encouraged to visit the Carers Victoria website or contact their local support services to find out about activities scheduled in their area, and to learn practical ways they can support the carers around them.
